Oakland is a city of culture, creativity, and community care. It has long been shaped by organizers, artists, educators, and neighbors who show up for one another, even in the face of systemic challenges. We care deeply about Oakland’s young people because they carry this legacy forward. Their voices, ideas, and leadership are essential to the future of this city. When we invest in Oakland youth, we are investing in a community that has always believed in resilience, justice, and collective care.

In Oakland, young people grow up navigating deep inequities alongside extraordinary resilience, creativity, and strength. Too often, students are asked to prepare for the future without support that reflects the realities of their lives or the needs of their communities. Rooted Future exists to meet students where they are, inside their schools and neighborhoods, and to affirm that their lived experience, values, and desire to give back are sources of power. When Oakland youth are supported to lead with purpose and care, they do not just change their own futures. They help shape a stronger, more connected community for all of us.

HOw We WORK

Grounding career readiness in service, relationships, and community support.



Rooted Future works directly in Oakland schools to support students through long-term relationships, not one-time workshops. Our program combines mentorship, community service, and career exploration with a clear focus on careers of impact that strengthen communities, such as healthcare, education, nonprofit work, and public service. Unlike traditional career readiness programs that focus only on resumes or job placement, Rooted Future centers on values like service, leadership, and care. Students are supported by adult mentors, community partners, and educators who help them connect their skills and passions to meaningful work that gives back to Oakland and beyond.

What WE DO

Rooted Future is a year-long, school-based program serving students in Oakland public schools. Students participate in structured leadership development, hands-on community service, and guided career exploration focused on careers that support community well-being. Through workshops, service projects, mentorship, and exposure to local professionals, students build practical skills, confidence, and a clear sense of direction for life after high school. The program is designed to grow alongside students, meeting them where they are and helping them take concrete steps toward meaningful futures.

As a Rooted Future volunteer, you can mentor students, share your career journey, support service projects, and help young people see what is possible for their futures.
